University Overview

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), located in Thiruvananthapuram, is a deemed university recognized under Section 3 of the UGC Act of 1956. Operating as an autonomous body under the Department of Space, Government of India, IIST was established to meet the growing demand for skilled personnel in the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This institute is pioneering in its commitment to providing high-quality education focused on space sciences, technology, and applications at various academic levels.

IIST was inaugurated on September 14, 2007, by Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman of ISRO. Initially located at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, it transitioned to its current permanent campus in 2010. The institution has benefited from the visionary leadership of prominent figures such as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the first Chancellor, and Dr. B.N. Suresh, its founding director and third Chancellor.

Under the guidance of a series of distinguished leaders, including Dr. K. Dasgupta and Dr. V.K. Dadhwal, IIST has continuously evolved, fostering an environment that encourages innovation, research, and collaboration, particularly in start-up initiatives related to space technology.
