Established in 1985 by Prof. P. Murugesan, the Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Institute of Science & Technology (PRIST) began as the Institute of Computer Science and Technology. Its founding aim was to enhance computer education in the Thanjavur District. By 1988, the institute secured affiliation with Bharathidasan University, allowing it to offer postgraduate diploma programs in computer applications. Since then, it has diversified to include various educational entities such as an Arts and Science College, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Education, Research Institution, and Polytechnic College.
