Overview of Ranchi University

Established on July 12, 1960, Ranchi University emerged as an autonomous institution following its separation from the former Bihar University. Initially, the university began with 10 postgraduate departments, one constituent college, and 20 affiliated colleges. Today, it has grown to encompass 22 postgraduate departments, 19 constituent colleges, and 47 affiliated colleges, collectively serving over 1.6 lakh students.

Ranchi University has been a crucial provider of higher education, particularly catering to the educational needs of the tribal regions. Since its establishment, it has played a vital role in empowering the marginalized youth in these areas.

Despite undergoing a split into four other universities—Vinoba Bhave University (1992), Nilambar Pitambar University (2009), Kolhan University (2009), and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (2019)—Ranchi University continues to serve a vast region spanning five major districts of Jharkhand and neighboring states like West Bengal, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. The university remains a prestigious institution in the state capital of Jharkhand, attracting students from across India.

To stay competitive with advancements in higher education, the university has introduced new courses in fields like Yoga, Medicine, Psychiatry, Law, Management, and Engineering. Additionally, it has revamped its traditional curriculum to include cutting-edge content.
